All classes will be held at McNally Robinson Booksellers, 1120 Grant Avenue, Winnipeg (Canada). Times are CST.

Note that the classes are limited to 10 people (with a minimum of 5 attendees). So, register early!

Introduction to Social Media

“Social media” is a phrase commonly used these days. But, do you know what the concept really means?

This class will explore and discuss social media and some key terms used in the field (e.g. ‘engagement’, ‘bookmarking’, ‘connections’, ‘networking’…). We will also answer some of the most pressing questions beginners may have, such as: Where do I start? What do I do? How much will it cost me? Can I “do” social media on my own or do I need to hire someone to take care of it for me? What are some common mistakes that I should avoid? What are the benefits of social media?

What to bring? Laptop computer / tablet, notebook, pen. No prior knowledge of social media required.

Introduction to Major Social Networks – Facebook, Twitter, Google+, LinkedIn and YouTube  

Right now, Facebook, Twitter, Google+, LinkedIn and YouTube are the five social networking giants. What does this mean for your involvement in social media? Do you need to master them all to be successful in business? In this class, we will explore the main differences between them, as well as what makes each unique (with a particular focus on Facebook and Google+). Create your own profile/group/page and learn some common mistakes to avoid when using social networks.

Introduction to Blogging

If you have always wanted to blog but do not know how to start, come join us! We will discuss the concept of “blogging” and its evolution, from ‘diary-like’ public space to branding tool. We will also explore major blogging platforms like WordPress.com, Tumblr, Blogger and Posterous, which make blogs easy to create. Learn some of the myths about blogging and how to avoid major beginner mistakes. In this class, we will also discuss the anatomy of a blog post and the different types of posts. A short segment will be dedicated to domain registrations and costs.

Blogging and building traffic – Important tips to attract targeted and quality traffic

Do you have a blog that lacks readership? In this class, we will explore and discuss some important tips and techniques to attract quality traffic, with a special focus on Search Engine Optimization and ‘niche’ blogging. We will also explore how to leverage social networks/bookmarking sites and content curation sites (Facebook, Google+, Twitter, Digg, Scoop.it, Paper.li, and StumbleUpon), while expounding on several widespread myths about blogging. If time permits, we will talk briefly about creating and using videos and podcasts.

In this class, we will explore and discuss the concepts of ‘brand’, ‘niche’ and ‘engagement’, and how to develop an efficient social media strategy. Learn to monitor your online presence and avoid promotional pitfalls. We will also briefly discuss newsletters, press releases and video creation.

In this class, we will explore and discuss the concepts of ‘brand’, ‘niche’ and ‘engagement’, and the differences between several blogging platforms (WordPress.com, Tumblr, Blogger and Posterous). Learn to create and customize a blog and/or website, as well as some important techniques and tips to attract quality traffic, including the “five-second rule,” Search Engine Optimization, and video and newsletter creation.

Writing Workshop: Find Your Poetic Voice

Is poetry your passion? Come and share it with us — and gain confidence in your writing skills! Every week, bring one poem that you wrote and you feel needs improvement. The group will work together to provide positive feedback, suggestions, support and motivation. If time permits, we will also explore and study some poetry forms, with a special focus on short forms such as haiku and senryu. What to bring? Notebook, pen, dictionaries (synonyms, rhyming, etc.).
